JP 2008!

Marcus Turner—Program Director  (home) 763-2222    (cell) 640-3306

Hello everyone; We are looking forward to another great year on the lake for our CLYC JP program!  Read below to see the details:

Staff - We have a great staff this year.  See the link above and read about our great group of counselors.

Swimming—Swimming is a fundamental part of the program.   We have WSI certified instructors and last year we installed lane dividers in our pool.   These lanes have helped us better organize and segregate different instruction levels of our participants and allow them to swim at the same time.  The milestone event is the Annual Swim-Across-the-Lake event and is a great achievement for those who swim with life jackets or without.

Sailing— Once participants are able to swim, they are eligible to begin to learn to sail.  We recognize that sailing is often an intimidating activity to learn.  We group participants by ability from non-sailor through those who are racing Opti’s and other boats.  Great care is taken to bring sailors along in small steps and give one on one attention while in the boat.  For those who know how to sail, we will be working on perfecting boat handling, sailing around buoys, more advanced skills, and racing.  Note: older participants may sail in bytes or lasers and will be trained in more advanced sailing and racing techniques

Does my child need a boat? Not until they have mastered the basics of sailing.  Our program has optimist prams available for participants who do not know how to sail.  We work one on one with our learning sailors until they have mastered basic sailing maneuvers.  At that time, our staff will let the parent know that their child is eligible to sail out in the lake with other sailors.  At that time, they should have access to their own boat or they will not have the opportunity to advance and become independent sailors.  When on the lake, we do not allow 2 participants in a boat as it distracts from the learning and does not allow the sailors to have as much sailing time.  In addition, please do not ask boat owners if you may share their boat as it takes training time away from the boat owner.

Rowing/Paddling—Another activity on the lake is handling a small craft without a sail or motor.  We teach the skills that are associated with rowing/paddling a small boat.  These skills are both fun and give participants more confidence in navigating on the lake once they have mastered them.  We will teach everything from parts of the boat, to strokes, to how to take passengers, to safety practices.  As it is often best to row/paddle when the lake is calm, this activity fits in well when there is not enough wind to sail.

NEW! Kayaking – this year we will add kayaking to our activity/instruction list.

Knots—Being on the lake and around boats, one comes in contact with knots on a regular basis.  We will teach four or five basic knots that are used all the time on boats and around the dock area.  They come in handy at home as well.  We will track achievement and recognize children as they master knots.

Flag Protocol—We will teach basic flag protocol to participants. (American flag, to burgee, to signal and code flags) Again, we will track and recognize when the knowledge is learned.

Water Safety & First Aid—Water safety and first aid based on American Red Cross guidelines will be taught.

                                                            Program Details:

Ages— JP is geared to kids ages 7-14.  Participants must have basic swimming skills (swim one length of the pool without aid).  Because of several requests, we will allow 6 year olds to participate if he/she can swim and is mature enough to handle the day long camp. If your child is not a basic swimmer, please take advantage of our learn-to-swim classes, held daily from 4:10pm-5:00pm.

Sign Up Weeks - In order to give a child the best chance to have fun and experience measurable achievement, we recommend a minimum of 4 weeks attendance.  We do recognize that summers are busy and that not all participants will be able to start on week 1.  Therefore, we will make special arrangements to orient first time participants in weeks 3 and 5 as well.  We will accept new participants in the other weeks but please note that it will be easier for your child to get acclimated during a start week as there will be other first timers going through at the same time.

Registration and cost –   View the registration form on the link at the top of the page.  Print it out (more copies are available at next to the bar at the club).  Fill out and send in with money before the end of May to get the early registration discount.
